TIA Says Obama Cybersecurity Proposal is a Positive Step Forward

Arlington, Va. (Jan. 13, 2015) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today responded to President Obama's proposal for cybersecurity legislation.

TIA CEO Scott Belcher released the following statement:

“We are strongly in favor of cybersecurity legislation that will give businesses more access to government information on threats, open channels for greater information sharing between companies, and enhance private sector liability protection. These three elements will help arm businesses with more weapons to fight attacks and give them more freedom to pursue innovative and aggressive solutions.

“While the President's proposal is complex and will require further analysis, our initial reaction is that it takes several positive steps toward achieving these goals. We are pleased that it seeks to improve information sharing, update law enforcement authority to combat cybercrime, and simplify data breach reporting requirements.

“Safeguarding product security and reliability is a priority for our industry, and we look forward to engaging with both the House and Senate to advance effective cybersecurity legislation.”
