TIA Applauds FCC Establishment of the Disability Advisory Committee and Recognizes International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Arlington, Va. (Dec. 3, 2014) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today recognized December 3 as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and applauded the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on the recent announcement of its plan to establish a new federal Disability Advisory Committee (DAC).

The DAC will serve as a useful mechanism to facilitate ongoing conversation between all stakeholders on issues of accessible use and access to telecommunications technology. This is particularly timely in light of this year's International Day of Persons with Disabilities theme of Sustainable Development: The Promise of Technology.

TIA and its members are committed to the goal of achieving access to communications technologies for all consumers with disabilities. The industry supported the passage of the Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act (CVAA) in 2010, and has worked collaboratively with the FCC in its implementation efforts since then.

ICT manufacturers have shown commitment to the success of CVAA and other accessibility legislation, which has resulted in increased accessibility of ICT. TIA and its member companies look forward to working with the FCC and disability advocates through the DAC to continue addressing remaining challenges to disability access to technology.
