TIA Applauds FCC Exploration of Spectrum Band Usage Above 24 GHz

Arlington, Va. (Jan. 20, 2015) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, filed comments applauding the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for launching a proceeding to explore the use of spectrum bands above 24 GHz, including millimeter-wave spectrum, for mobile broadband.

TIA believes that the same principles for a good, national spectrum policy continue to apply in the millimeter-wave bands, including principles of predictability, flexibility, efficiency, priority and global coordination. TIA urges the FCC to avoid applying a one-size-fits-all approach to millimeter-wave bands and instead consider the particular characteristics of each band. TIA supports the use of various spectrum access models (licensed, unlicensed, etc.) to maximize the potential for innovation in the bands.

TIA requests the FCC to begin focusing on bands where large contiguous blocks of spectrum are available, to provide appropriate protections for existing services, and to potentially consider bands in addition to those already identified by the agency.

As mobile use paradigms expand to embrace many devices beyond phones and tablets, millimeter-wave spectrum will be an important tool in the toolkit for developing next-generation mobile networks, even as the FCC continues its work on identifying additional lower-band spectrum.
