Telecommunications Industry Association Applauds FCC Action on Incentive Auctions

ARLINGTON, VA (Sept. 7, 2012) - The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today applauded the FCC for circulating a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking regarding voluntary incentive auctions of spectrum.

“TIA has advocated for incentive auction legislation for years, and we’re very happy that the Commission is moving forward to implement the legislation,” said TIA President Grant Seiffert.  “Spectrum auctions will allow for new investment in critical wireless network infrastructure, leading to hundreds of thousands of new jobs as well as improved mobile broadband service for American consumers.  The impact of additional spectrum availability on the U.S. economy, including on ICT manufacturers, will be enormous and cannot be underestimated.”

Seiffert continued, “We’re very pleased that today’s notice includes a timeline for the Commission to circulate final rules by mid-2013, with auctions to occur in 2014.  The spectrum crunch is increasingly affecting consumers and businesses, and the FCC’s plans to bring new spectrum to the market rapidly are an important part of maintaining American economic competitiveness. TIA looks forward to working with the Commission in the months ahead to provide constructive feedback on the proposed rules, and to help the Commission ensure that the auctions are designed to maximize the potential of next-generation mobile devices.”
