TIA Commends the FCC for E-Rate Reforms and Investment Boost

Arlington, VA (February 5, 2014) – Grant Seiffert, the President of the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today commended the FCC’s action:

“These new investments will produce dividends for years to come by giving teachers, students and library users greater access to the benefits of advanced broadband.  Through enhanced access and higher speeds to libraries, schools and classrooms, this effort is making a vital $2 billion down payment towards America's future.

“The E-Rate has served the country well for years, but we agree with Chairman Wheeler’s statement that the program is too slow and burdensome.  And with that, we applaud the FCC for stepping up with reforms that will streamline the program, creating more incentives for efficient and economical investment decisions, and will use existing funds more efficiently.

“TIA has consistently supported President Obama’s goal of connecting 99 percent of students to high speed internet.  This is a very challenging goal, but the FCC’s plan for greater E-Rate funding and programmatic reforms provides a critical boost towards ubiquitous broadband for America’s students.

“We thank Chairman Wheeler for his dedication to this issue and look forward to working with the Commission to continue to advance broadband access in America."
