TIA to Hold M2M-Cybersecurity Workshop – June 4-5 in Arlington, Va.

Cybersecurity is Essential to Realizing Full Promise of the Internet of Things; Workshop will Focus on M2M Security Solutions and Standards & Include Public Policy Discussion

Arlington, VA (May 14, 2013) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today announced that it will gather executives, industry experts and policymakers for “Enabling Adoption for All,” a two-day workshop focused on the intersection of M2M and cybersecurity. The workshop, which will explore the importance of cybersecurity in the adoption of M2M and the realization of the Internet of Things (IOT), will take place June 4-5 at TIA’s headquarters and conference center in Arlington, Va.

Cybersecurity is a critical challenge as M2M and IOT technologies proliferate. These technologies have the potential to create significant economic opportunities, revolutionize global business, and dramatically change the way devices and people communicate across billions of connections. In its 2013 ICT Market Review & Forecast, TIA reported that corporate M2M spending is expected to achieve a combined average growth rate of 57.2 percent over the next four years.

Recognizing that cybersecurity must be addressed before this new communications frontier can reach its full potential, TIA is bringing together leaders to discuss industry solutions and standards that that can help ensure secure, reliable communications between devices and across platforms.  The workshop will also include a special discussion focused on the cybersecurity policy landscape, looking at the M2M impact of the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) and the recent cybersecurity Executive Order.  Cora Han, from the Division of Privacy and Identity Protection at the FTC, a representative from NIST, and others will participate.

The workshop – which is sponsored by Wyless, Intel, ILS Technology and the Information Technology Acquisition Advisory Council (ITAAC) – is part of a broader TIA effort to lead the global development of M2M standards, technologies and policies that will allow these technologies to flourish. It will serve both to educate industry and as a forum for collaborating on cybersecurity solutions.  The full agenda is available here.

The workshop is open to the media, and interested reporters should contact to Ashley Rook to RSVP: ashleyrook@rational360.com or 202-429-4929.
