TIA Promotes Herb Congdon to VP of Technology & Standards

ARLINGTON, VA (November 12, 2013) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today announced the appointment of Herbert V. Congdon II, PE to Vice-President of Technology & Standards.  Congdon, who has been with TIA since 2011, replaces Cheryl Blum who will retire from TIA.

Herb Congdon joined TIA as Associate Vice-President of the Technology & Standards Department and has worked in the optical fiber cable and components industry since 1992.  As VP, he is responsible for the Association’s programs for writing and maintaining voluntary industry standards and specifications, formulating positions for presentations on behalf of the United States in international standards fora, and preparing technical information and reports for use by the industry and government.

“Herb was a perfect choice for the role and brings a long history of service to TIA, both as an employee and with our Engineering Committees,” said Grant Seiffert, President of TIA.  “Herb will serve TIA well in this new capacity, however we will certainly miss Cheryl.  She has been very important to TIA over the years, and has had a long and impressive career.  Cheryl has been an extremely valuable ambassador to our membership and to the international standards community.  We wish Cheryl the best in her retirement.”

Herb Congdon previously held positions in technical marketing, product line management, product engineering, process engineering, applications engineering and standards with TE Connectivity (formerly Tyco Electronics) and Corning Cable Systems (formerly Siecor Corporation).  Since 1996, he has also served in leadership positions in TIA TR-42 Telecommunications Cabling Infrastructure Engineering Committee and other related subcommittees and international TAGs.

He earned an electrical engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Nuclear Navy Submarine program.  Congdon is also a licensed Professional Engineer with two patents and has served as President of the Professional Engineers of North Carolina.  He was recognized with the Harry J. Fister Award for Excellence in the Telecommunications Industry (awarded by the University of South Florida College of Engineering and BICSI) in 2011.
