TIA Says TPA will Boost Economy and Create U.S. Jobs; Urges Swift Action on Bill Introduced Today

Arlington, Va. (Apr. 16, 2015) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today applauded the introduction of the Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities and Accountability Act of 2015. According to TIA, modernizing and renewing Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) will help open the door to new markets for U.S. goods and services, boosting U.S. economic growth and supporting well-paying U.S. jobs.

“The passage of Trade Promotion Authority legislation is critical to increasing the competitiveness of U.S. companies overseas and to ensuring continued job growth at home,;” said TIA Chief Executive Officer Scott Belcher. “TPA is particularly important for maintaining our country’s international leadership in the highly competitive information and communications industry. The U.S. has an ambitious trade agenda, and swift passage of TPA renewal is important to ensuring successful outcomes in ongoing trade negotiations, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).”

TIA appreciates the leadership of Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) in advancing TPA legislation, which provides Congressional guidance to the Administration. This guidance includes negotiating objectives for trade agreements, requirements for consultations with Congress and other stakeholders, and the conditions for Congressional consideration of legislation to implement trade agreements.
