TIA Submits Comments to Department of Commerce on Cybersecurity Incentives

ARLINGTON, VA (April 29, 2013) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today submitted comments to the Department of Commerce’s Notice of Inquiry on incentives to adopt improved cybersecurity practices (78 FR 18954, March 28, 2013).

In its filing, TIA presented information and communications technology (ICT) manufacturer and vendor community consensus views on the incentives piece that is so crucial to combating cyber threats and attacks. Noting that current incentives are based around the successful utilization of successful public-private partnerships and reliance upon international, industry-led standards and best practices, among others, TIA also underscored for the Department of Commerce that the imposition of cybersecurity regulations alone will not be effective in incenting cybersecurity-related investments. An utmost concern for the Department in forming its recommendations to the President in this area should be to respect the need for specific sectors to innovate and address specific threats, that enhanced information sharing is needed, and the necessity of international approaches and standards, among other priorities.
