TIA Submits Comments on NHTSA’s Preliminary Statement of Policy Concerning Automated Vehicles

ARLINGTON, VA (June 20, 2013) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today submitted comments to the office of NHTSA Administrator David Strickland in reaction to the May 30, 2013-issued National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Preliminary Statement of Policy Concerning Automated Vehicles.

In its letter, TIA explained that NHTSA’s policy statement, while acknowledging the infancy of the technology, nonetheless makes numerous statements about not only what direction automated vehicle technology should take but what specific aspects testing should include, along with how it should be licensed.  TIA believes this to be discouraging to investment and innovation in this nascent and exciting technology field. Furthermore, we urge NHTSA to recognize that public consultations that will include the consideration of all stakeholders’ viewpoints are a crucial aspect of making fully-informed policy determinations in evaluating the appropriateness of automated vehicle technology.”
