TIA Supports Executive Order Promoting Private Sector Cybersecurity Information Sharing

Arlington, Va. (Feb. 17, 2015) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today applauded the executive order, Promoting Private Sector Cybersecurity Information Sharing, signed by President Obama on February 13.

TIA CEO Scott Belcher released the following statement:

“TIA supports recent steps taken to enable the voluntary sharing of real-time bi-directional cybersecurity information amongst and between key government and industry partners (and their suppliers). While we believe that this requires Congress to provide adequate liability protections while also ensuring that an information-sharing regime appropriately addresses privacy and civil liberties concerns, the issuance of President Obama's Executive Order moves towards an improved ability for businesses to have more access to government information on threats and more open channels for greater information sharing between companies.

“TIA also notes that information sharing should not be viewed as the end game. Rather, information sharing is a tool to achieve timely, reliable, and actionable situational awareness through information sharing, analysis, and collaboration. That is why it is important for the White House, Congress and other stakeholders to also work together towards other important improvements, such as cybersecurity R&D, workforce training and education, and public awareness.

“We look forward to working with the White House, as well as Congress, on ways to enhance how cyber threat information is shared and other important areas that improve national security.”
