TIA Supports FCC Review of In-Flight Mobile Connectivity Regulations on Aircraft to Expand Mobile Wireless Access Onboard Aircraft

TIA, ITI and CEA Submit Joint Comments to FCC in Response to Notice of Proposed Rulemaking

Arlington, VA (May 16, 2014) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, joined with the Information Technology and Industry Council (ITI) and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), in filing comments with the FCC regarding in-flight mobile communications (IMC).  TIA, ITI and CEA support the Commission’s proposal to remove outdated regulatory barriers for access to in-flight mobile connectivity.

The joint commenters noted that there is widespread support for the Commission’s proposal to re-examine its regulations, including support from IMC providers, airlines, aircraft manufacturers, and industry associations.

As an initial step, the commenters urged the Commission to allow already-existing Airborne Access Systems (AAS) to operate on international flights to and from the United States. AASs have operated for years without causing harmful interference to terrestrial networks around the world, including Canada and Mexico.  Meanwhile, stakeholders will work together to ensure that technical standards for domestic flights take into consideration specific U.S. spectrum allocations.
