TIA Applauds Advancement of House Legislation to Promote Next-Gen Broadband Networks

Arlington, VA (December 2, 2015) - The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, today applauded the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology for passing legislation to promote next-generation broadband networks.

The Subcommittee passed a legislative package to improve broadband infrastructure deployment and H.R. 1641, the Federal Spectrum Incentive Act.

TIA CEO Scott Belcher issued the following statement:

“We thank Chairman Walden, Ranking Member Eshoo and all the Subcommittee members for advancing today’s bills, including legislation to promote broadband infrastructure deployment. According to some estimates, 90% of the cost of network installation results from digging up and repairing roadways to install conduit. The bill's “dig once” provision will help ensure cost-efficient and timely broadband expansion to more Americans.

“Furthermore, providing incentives for the Federal government – the largest holder of spectrum – to make more spectrum available for non-Federal uses, such as mobile broadband services, is an important objective. We are pleased that the Subcommittee has made this a priority by advancing the Federal Spectrum Incentive Act.  Encouraging the deployment of next-generation broadband networks – both wired and wireless – is critical to enabling continued advances in healthcare, education and public safety, among other areas. We look forward to continuing to work with the Committee as both of these bills move forward in the House.”
