Acronym for radiation absorbed dose. The basic unit of measure for expressing absorbed radiant energy per unit mass of material. Note 1: A rad corresponds to an absorption of 0.01 J/kg, i.e. , 100 ergs/g. Note 2: The absorbed radiant energy heats, ionizes, and/or destroys the material upon which it is incident.
