High-Performance Building Congressional Caucus Coalition Briefing

Buildings account for approximately 70% of electricity consumption, 40% of energy use and 40% of all CO2 emissions in the United States. Greater adoption of smart building design and technology could yield $40 to $50 billion in gross national savings in 2020. This briefing will address how information and communications technology (ICT) can reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions and provide an introduction to the Sustainable Technology Environments Program (STEP) rating system and guide, which encourages the use of ICT to make buildings smarter, reduce paper consumption and reduce GHG emissions associated with travel.
