TIA Launches Smart Building Action Cluster @ GCTC
In collaboration with the National Institute of Standards (NIST) and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) at the U.S. Department of Commerce, TIA will launch the Smart Building Action Cluster at the Global City Technology Challenge Kick-off 2018 Event.

About the Smart Building Action Cluster Launch
NTIA, NIST and the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) invite you to the launch of the Smart Building Action Cluster (SBAC).
Market demand for intelligent, interactive, connected real property systems and locations is growing among developers, building operators, tenants, event attendees, students, health practitioners, energy providers and others. Smart Buildings need broadband infrastructure—both wireless and wireline.
GCTC Superclusters’ work indicates that in order to harmonize building and city services (e.g., coordinate water services and repairs or delivery trucks around public safety or traffic), smart buildings and smart cities need to operate together. Interoperability between smart buildings and smart city communications infrastructure and systems will help to make resource use and city services more efficient, and can help accelerate the growth into a smart city.
This SBAC will focus on the crucial nexus of smart buildings and smart communities’ interoperability. We hope you will join us for the SBAC launch and brainstorming discussion.

About the Global City Teams Challenge (GCTC)
Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) involve connecting smart devices and systems—in diverse sectors such as transportation, energy, manufacturing, and healthcare—in fundamentally new ways. These technologies will enable cities and communities to improve services, promote economic growth, and enhance the quality of life.
Because many of today’s smart city/community development efforts are isolated and customized projects, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) launched the Global City Teams Challenge (GCTC) to encourage collaboration and the development of standards.
GCTC’s long-term goal is “to establish and demonstrate replicable, scalable, and sustainable models for incubation and deployment of interoperable, standard-based solutions using advanced technologies such as IoT and CPS, and demonstrate their measurable benefits in communities and cities.” To put it simply, this program will help communities benefit from the experience of others to improve efficiency and lower costs.
In its 2018 round, NIST and U.S. Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate (DHS S&T) will co-host the GCTC-SC3 program and will encourage participating teams to have additional focus on cybersecurity and privacy as the first order concern, as well as all existing GCTC goals such as replicability, scalability and sustainability.
NIST, along with its partners, acts as a matchmaker and incubator —facilitating, advising, encouraging, nurturing, and publicizing the action clusters and their projects. Since the programs launched in September 2014, GCTC has recruited and incubated over 160 with participation from over 150 cities and 400 companies/organizations from around the world.
