While still nascent, the development of 5G is at an inflection point. Before the ICT industry begins to define various solutions for 5G, the industry must collectively identify the problems with today’s mobile networks. Billions of connected devices, different radio interfaces, energy efficiency, backhaul and fronthaul, cost-per-Gigabit, rural build-out and connectivity, and the use of licensed and unlicensed spectrum are concerns facing mobile network operators as they continue to monetize their legacy network infrastructure and roll out their LTE networks. Equipment providers, service providers and carriers, academia, consortia, standards development organizations and government bodies need to begin to collect the thoughts of the industry on what the next generation of mobile networks will require before there is a fragmentation of solutions for 5G.
To help guide the industry, TIA’s one-day roundtable will address the problems facing carriers and service providers - now and six to ten years from now. Attendees will have an important role in shaping and communicating the future vision of 5G. Outcomes from the roundtable will include an Industry Action Report to capture the current status of mobile networks and recommendations for steps forward.
