Join the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) at a day-long workshop on March 30, bringing together the automotive and communications industries to discuss and explore trends, challenges and opportunities in the connected and autonomous vehicle space.
TIA's Workshop will be held in conjunction with the unveiling of the GoMentum Station Connected Vehicle / Autonomous Vehicle Program - the largest autonomous vehicle testing site in the United States - being hosted by the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) on Tuesday, March 31.

This panel will have industry experts discussing the future of vehicle connectivity and data generation. They will explore the different forms of connectivity, such as internet/cloud connection and vehicle-to-X (vehicle, infrastructure or person) communications using technologies such as Wi-Fi, 4G, 5G, and DSRC.
In addition to discussing the various connectivity options, panelists will talk about how to address interoperability with the various vehicle connection technologies, deal with large amounts of data that vehicle connectivity produces, and solutions to possible security challenges.

With a focus on automotive infotainment, connected vehicle and power electronics technologies, Patrick has previously held strategic sales and business development roles with companies such as Panasonic, Sirius Satellite Radio, Sony Electronics and his own independent consulting firm.
Andy Castonguay

Andy has worked as an analyst, advisor and consultant to the mobile industry for over 15 years. With local experience in Latin America and North America, Andy has worked extensively with service providers, device manufacturers, technology vendors and financial institutions in both mature and growth markets. As a Principal Analyst at Machina Research, he is focused on the rapidly evolving M2M ecosystems in the Americas with particular focus on mobile health solutions and the M2M devices space.
Prior to joining Machina Research, Andy was a Principal Analyst at Informa Telecoms & Media with focus on mobile devices, application platforms and M2M solutions. During his tenure at the Yankee Group, Andy was Director of Mobile Devices Research, Director of the North American consumer practice and Program Manager for the Latin American mobile services group.
Drue Freeman
Senior Vice President, Global Automotive Sales and Marketing
NXP Semiconductors
Drue Freeman has over 20 years of experience in the semiconductor industry, including more than ten years in the automotive business at Philips and NXP. In 2009, he was appointed Head of Global Automotive Sales and Marketing at NXP. Before his current role, he was Vice President for Automotive Quality and Customer Excellence and oversaw significant improvements in customer satisfaction.
After seven years at the NXP Automotive headquarters in Germany, Drue relocated to Shanghai, China, in 2011 in order to further strengthen relationships with the Asian customer base and to support the strong growth in Greater China, Korea, and Japan. Previously, he had spent six years in Tokyo, where he established and led the regional automotive marketing organization for Japan and Asia. Drue holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from San Diego State University, and an MBA from Pepperdine University in Los Angeles.
Jack Hall, P.E.
ITS CV/AV Program Manager, Contra Costa Transportation Authority
Jack provides project management for CCTA projects, assists local agencies with delivery of their Measure J projects, and helps manage implementation of Intelligent Transportation Systems in Contra Costa.
Jack has 18 years of experience as a California Professional Engineer. He served nine years in the United States Air Force.
Marcial Hernandez
Stanford University
Marcial Hernandez is a Ph.D. candidate in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University under Professor Christian Gerdes researching control systems for autonomous vehicles. He received a B.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of New Mexico, and a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University.
Marcial has been working in automated driving for almost ten years, and was previously the head of driver assistance systems research at Volkswagen Group of America. While at Volkswagen he oversaw several research projects including a 2010 showcase for autonomously driving the Pikes Peak Highway using an Audi TTS. His current research focuses on learning from professional race car and limousine drivers to improve comfort and safety of future autonomous vehicles.
Drew Johnson
Vice President of Engineering, Aeris Communications, Inc.
Drew Johnson is an engineering leader and technologist with more than 20 years of experience at both large and small companies. Drew started his career at Compaq Computer working on the first generations of mobile computing devices.
Prior to Aeris, he was Director of Engineering at Austin mobile start-up SoloMio and VP of Engineering at mobile and messaging software company Openwave. He holds a Masters degree in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Illinois and holds more than 20 patents.
Dr. Bakhtiar Litkouhi
Manager, Vehicle Control Systems Group
General Motors Global R&D
Dr Litkouhi manages both Automated Driving and Vehicle Control Systems and Perception and Sensor Systems groups at General Motors Global Research and Development. In addition to his current responsibilities, he is a board member of the Intelligent Transportation Society of Michigan, a member of the Board of Directors of the Waterloo Center for Automotive Research (WatCAR), the Program Manager of GM - Carnegie Mellon University Autonomous Driving Collaborative Research Lab, and the Consortium Management Committee member of Crash Avoidance Metrics Partnership/Vehicle Safety Consortia.
Dr. Litkouhi has served as the Program Manager for several large scale projects in Autonomous and Intelligent Vehicle Systems, Human Machine Interface, Systems Engineering and Integrated Vehicle Control, where he has made many contributions through numerous publications and presentations. Dr Litkouhi holds 95 records of invention, with 32 granted, 35 published and 28 pending patents.
Prior to joining General Motors, Dr Litkouhi was an assistant professor at Oakland University, Michigan. He holds a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics and Ph.D. in Systems Science, specializing in Control Systems.
Michael Robinson
CEO and Design Director, ED Design srl.
ED Design is a design and engineering company within the automotive and transportation industry. Michael Robinson graduated from the University of Washington in Fine Arts and Industrial Design and has lived in Turin, Italy since 1979.
Previously, Robinson held the position of Design Director at Bertone, Fiat, and Lancia and worked as a designer with Ford in Dearborn and Volvo in Gothenborg, Sweden. His more prominent styling contributions include the 1986 Ford Ghia TSX-4 concept car; the Fiat Bravo/Brava/Marea, which won European Car of the Year in 1995; the Lancia Lybra, Thesis, Giubileo (Pope John Paul II’s personal limousine), Phedra, and Ypsilon, and the Fiat Ducato. As Bertone Design Director he created the 2010 Alfa Romeo Pandion, 2011 Jaguar B99, 2012 Nuccio, and 2013 Aston Martin Jet 2+2 concept cars, plus the FAW X80 and the BAIC D50 production cars in China.
In non-automotive achievements, Robinson has designed the 2015 Frecciarossa 1000, the new high speed train for Europe; the AgustaWestland Project Zero, a full electric, twin, tilt rotor VTOL flying wing which just won the coveted Grover Bell Innovations Award in 2014; and the 1995 Mangusta 65 Open, a sport luxury yacht.
David Strickland

Venable LLP
The Honorable David Strickland, currently a partner at the national law firm Venable LLP, served as the 14th Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) from 2010–2014.
During his tenure he oversaw the creation of the first national fuel economy program in conjunction with the EPA, the launching of the Safety Pilot for the Vehicle to Vehicle Communications program for the U.S. Department of Transportation/NHTSA, and issued the first statement of policy regarding the testing of automated vehicles on public roads. Prior to his appointment to NHTSA, Mr. Strickland served as Senior Counsel to the U.S Senate Commerce Committee, where he was responsible for the staff oversight of the Federal Trade Commission, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and NHTSA from 2001–2009.
Peter F. Sweatman
Director, University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) and Director, Michigan Mobility Transformation Center (MTC)
Dr. Sweatman is a national thought leader in intelligent transportation systems and future mobility for people and freight. UMTRI is a world-renowned institute in the field of transportation safety and sustainability. Under his leadership, the world's largest deployment of connected cars, transit buses and freight trucks (U.S. DOT Safety Pilot Model Deployment) launched in Ann Arbor in 2012.
On May 14, 2013, the University of Michigan announced the formation of the new Michigan Mobility Transformation Center (MTC). Dr. Sweatman was appointed Director of MTC, whose mission addresses connected and automated transportation and its contribution to 21st Century Mobility. Dr. Sweatman's vision for MTC includes the deployment of new mobility machines for people and freight in Ann Arbor.
Dr. Sweatman served as the 2012-13 Chair of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITSA) Board of Directors, and is currently serving as Chair of ITSA's Leadership Circle. In addition, he serves on the ITS World Congress Board of Directors Representing the Americas, most recently as Program Chair, 2014-2015 and as International Program Chair for the 21st Intelligent Transport Systems World Congress held in Detroit, Michigan, September 7-11, 2014; and will continue to serve on the Board for the 22nd World Congress on ITS, Bordeaux, 2014; the 23rd World Congress on ITS, Melbourne, 2015; and the 24th World Congress on ITS, Montreal, 2016.
Dr. Sweatman's service at the national level includes his 2010 appointment to the ITS Advisory Committee by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation and his recent appointment as Chair of the Transportation Research Board's Committee on the European-U.S. Transportation Research Symposium on Road Vehicle Automation, scheduled for April 14-15, 2015, in Washington, DC. He is currently serving on the Expert Panel for the Together for Safer Roads Coalition.
