The backhaul needed to support 5G connectivity is being developed on assumptions of massive bytes of data flying over complex network systems to manage unimaginable numbers of applications for consumers, enterprise, government and military. Investment today is being made to support 5G technology which is still under development, for which business models are in flux and return on investment uncertain. Yet bets are being placed. This presentation will follow the money trail in network development, technology development, and application use cases as the connectivity industry carves a path from where backhaul stands today, to envisioned 5G-readiness.

Setting the Stage for Urban Innovation with 5G Networks
Efficiency, security, speed, data are all hallmarks of next generation urban networks. Cities have big expectations of how these networks will serve their citizens, public agencies and enterprise customers. Those who live and do business in these urban centers have ever increasing demands and expectations of their own, both from the cities in which they live and the networks on which they rely. Universities, government agencies and businesses see opportunity to serve both public and private customers with new services that take advantage of the different kinds of connectivity infrastructure that urban networks will use.
The question is what types of networks will be built and how will they offer streamlined, application-based connectivity and efficiency at scale, together with security, and at a cost structure that inspires innovation and growth?
The City of Boston will be showcased for this exploration into networking the urban environment. Together with Verizon and other partners, the City has launched a smart community pilot from which all plan to learn about data traffic, usage, network and other elements. The discussion will cover the choices and expectations both the City and Verizon have for this pilot. It will also look at the types of technologies which will need to be used in order to bring streamlined, efficient, cost effective and secure networking to this and other urban centers across the U.S.
