TIA Issues New Detail Specification for 50-µm Core Diameter/125-µm Cladding Diameter Class 1a Graded-Index Multimode Optical Fibers with Laser-Optimized Bandwidth Characteristics Specified for Wavelength Division Multiplexing Standard
Arlington, VA (July 19, 2016) – The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) which develops standards for the information and communications technology industry, today released a new document, TIA-492AAAE Detail Specification for 50-µm Core Diameter/125-µm Cladding Diameter Class 1a Graded-Index Multimode Optical Fibers with Laser-Optimized Bandwidth Characteristics Specified for Wavelength Division Multiplexing.
The TIA-492AAAE document will define a specification for multimode fiber with the necessary properties to support transmission of multiple wavelengths including and beyond 850 nm. The performance is intended to enable transmission of at least 28 Gbps per wavelength for a total transmission capacity of at least 100 Gbps per fiber to distance of at least 100 m. Today, standard data rates exceeding 28 Gbps are delivered over multimode fibers using parallel transmission. Consequently multimode solutions have been proposed for 400G Ethernet that require 32 fibers.
TIA-492AAAE was formulated under the cognizance of the TIA’s engineering committee TR-42 on Telecommunications Cabling Systems, and the TR-42.12 Optical Fibers and Cables subcommittee.
For more information about TIA’s engineering committee TR-42 and how to participate in standards development with TIA, contact Germaine Palangdao at standards@tiaonline.org.
TIA actively seeks participation in these projects from the user and general interest communities.
