TIA issues New Location Services Overview Standard

Arlington, VA (December 13, 2017) – The Telecommunications Industry Association, which develops standards for the information and communications technology industry, has released a new document, TSB-102.BAJA-B Location Services Overview

TSB-102.BAJA-B specifies requirements for telecommunications infrastructure for The Location Services Overview and provides a high-level description of how TIA-102 standards and other industry standards are used to provide location reporting on Land Mobile Radio (LMR) systems. The purpose of this revision is to align the document with the latest revisions to the Tier 1 and Tier 2 Location Services standards. 

LMR systems provide a means to supply a Location Service Host System with the location of subscriber units moving throughout the area of LMR systems. The objective of Location Services Overview is to describe how TIA-102 series standards are used to provide a location reporting service for LMR systems. The specifications in the TIA-102 Location Services document suite provide a means for subscriber units and infrastructure elements from various manufacturers to interoperate when providing location services.

TSB-102.BAJA-B describes LMR Location Services, including a brief summary of the solution, document suite and its architecture. The document also describes a two-tiered approach to providing location services. Tier 1 Location Service supports a simple SU to SU interface for the Direct Data or Repeated Data configuration without providing IP addressing, fixed host routing or more advanced configuration of triggering and reporting. This approach is appropriate for real-time field incident applications where the Location Service Host System is resident on a portable device. Tier 2 Location Service is for Direct Data, Repeated Data, Conventional FNE Data, or Trunked FNE Data configurations and utilizes a more complex application protocol to configure triggering and reporting in the SU from a fixed host. Additionally, Tier 2 uses UDP/IP to allow routing and transport in a fixed network for communication to and from a fixed host or SU. This approach is appropriate for applications in areas that contain the necessary infrastructure. 

TSB-102.BAJA-B was formulated under the cognizance of the TIA TR-8 Mobile and Personal Private Radio Standards, TR-8.5 Signaling and Data Transmission subcommittee. Jim Eastwood of Motorola Solutions served as chairman of the TR-8.5 subcommittee that developed the standard. The standard was developed as a part of Project 25, a suite of standards for mobile radio communications.
