Engineering Committee TR-48 is responsible for the development and maintenance of voluntary standards relating to vehicular telematics equipment and services and intended to be employed in support of vehicular telematics.
Vehicular Telematics services have been drawing attentions from the auto industry, and transportation regulators and service providers for public safety reasons. Through their work on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), many of the global standard forums have been developing the capability to transmit road conditions, vital automobile crash warnings or information to emergency responders immediately following an incident. The 5.9 GHz Dedicated Short Range Communications for Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (DSRC/WAVE) communications system has been chosen to be the primary radio for North America ITS emergency services, which is TR-48's primary area of focus for standards development.
