TIA's IoT Week: TIA Workshop

With today’s communications networks, data is being used to transform how people live in, experience and interact with their environments. The amount of information a retailer can learn about customers as they enter a store can transform the customer buying experience. Sensors embedded along historic streets can bring to life layers of information through mixed reality. Hospitals will be able to more closely monitor patients during and after their care, while streamlining operations. Already such spaces are under design, and there is much to be learned.

This panel will discuss current use cases and experiments in data informed interactive spaces, as well as what we can anticipate in the not too distant future.

Jason directs I-SENSE, the Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering. I-SENSE is a research and development institute focused on sensing, computing, and communication technology. I-SENSE catalyzes collaboration across disciplines, academia, industry, and government to tackle some of the planet’s most important challenges. Active program areas include Marine and Environment, Infrastructure Systems, and Health and Behavior. Jason will share progress and lessons learned in developing, deploying, and maintaining large-scale sensing infrastructure, from monitoring water quality throughout the Savannah River, to assessing storm water management impacts in municipalities, to safeguarding and restoring fragile wetlands and ecosystems.

The explosion of IoT and M2M has created a Wild West environment for technical specifications, both proprietary and open. The oneM2M™ standard seeks to cut through the noise and grow innovation by creating a common service layer onto which a variety of hardware and software applications can be attached with assured connectivity worldwide. oneM2M™ is active and growing into the business domains of smart cities, telematics and intelligent transportation, healthcare, utilities, industrial automation, and smart homes.

Ms. Chandra will introduce oneM2M™ and its development history within the oneM2M™ Partnership Project. An example application will be the U.K.’s oneTRANSPORT intelligent system trial which serves four U.K. counties, England’s highways transportation agency and two private sector sensor-network owners over a single, interoperable IoT platform powered by the oneM2M™ standard. Dr. Wollman will present the National Institute for Science and Technology (NIST) Big Data Framework and its smart city activities which collaborates with oneM2M™ in providing guidelines for large scale deployments.

Data is meaningless if it is not actionable. Our connected world is streaming terabytes of data into algorithms, centralized computers, applications, edge devices, and myriad other locations across the communications networks of today. And this is only the beginning. Transforming data into information that helps a city optimize operations enhances patient after-surgery recovery, prevents industry accidents and injury, helps operations, sells products, and improves the bottom line. But what data should be captured? What is the process of managing and making use of it to produce effective products, services or processes?  How can data best be used to create compelling user experiences (UX) and customer experiences (CX) that keep people engaged and drive desired behavior?  This panel will explore how to create actionable data, and how to make it work for you in your own organization.
