Autonomy at Scale: The Policy, Technology and Business of Autonomous Vehicles
Saving lives combined with significant technological advances and business opportunity drive the push for the autonomous vehicle. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 1.25 million people died in 2013 from road accidents. In the United States, last year saw 38,300 deaths and 4.4 million injuries resulting from automotive accidents, and the numbers are rising. University and corporate labs are developing and testing autonomous vehicles. But the path to having 253 million cars and trucks (the current estimated number for the United States), of which 80% are autonomous, is long and multilayered. What do we need to develop in communications connectivity, infrastructure, systems, laws and regulations, technology advancements, and business models that will allow autonomy to reach nationwide, ubiquitous scale? This panel will take a hard look at the hoped for dream and the reality of the steps needed to achieve it.

Vehicle Connectivity and Automated Driving: The Role of Standards
Connectivity dramatically changes how vehicles operate, and policy makers and regulators need to adapt their legal instruments to meet safety, quality and interoperability requirements of consumers and businesses. Product developers rely on standards for ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and performance requirements for sensors, precise real-time mapping and positioning systems, electronic architectures, and software for the entire vehicle life cycle.
On the basis of timely examples (e.g., levels of driving automation; 5.9 GHz and spectrum sharing), the panel will provide an international perspective on standards and regulatory frameworks addressing vehicle connectivity and automated driving. You’ll learn about opportunities and bottlenecks, and how they can be overcome through collaborative efforts.

Bringing “Security by Design” to Life
Evolving vehicle technology, enhanced connectivity, and increasingly smart infrastructure are making driving safer and more convenient. For automotive industry stakeholders, this means cyber security is no longer optional, and must be a key element of activities across the product lifecycle. This panel will dig beneath the surface and explore the art and science of security by design. Panelists will highlight how effective practitioners utilize threat and risk assessments to aim scarce resources, discuss the role of secure coding and good cyber security hygiene, and cover the critical role of third party assessors and pen testers.
